An Introduction to Hypnosis

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

Hypnosis is the “quieting” of the conscious mind, so that the subconscious mind is open to suggestion.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN HYPNOTIZED?

Have you ever been driving and so deeply engrossed in your thoughts that you arrived at your destination without realizing any of the details of the area you had just passed through? Well, you were indeed hypnotized! All of the information you need to drive your car is stored in your subconscious. Once you began your journey, moved into a consistent flow of traffic and reached a consistent speed, your subconscious took over the driving and your conscious mind was free to wander. With any change your conscious mind was ready to jump back in, but for the moment…self hypnosis!

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE FIRST SESSION?

When you come to my office on your initial visit there is an extensive intake interview to determine what changes you would like to make in your life. We take time to uncover what issues may be at play to prevent you from achieving your goal. Are you here because someone else sent you? I also look for underlying issues that may actually be causing the problem. Smoking, for example. Many people smoke because they’re under stress. They also don’t want to quit because they’re afraid they’ll gain weight. Sound familiar. In this case, stress is the underlying issue. The deep drag that a smoker takes each time he inhales is actually called a diaphragmatic breath and it’s the same breath used in yoga. It relaxes the body. Smokers are actually self medicating against the physiological effects of stress without knowing it. When they quit smoking, they often turn to food to self medicate because they still have not addressed the underlying cause of the distress they’re feeling in the first place! Therefore, creating the fallacy that when you stop smoking you gain weight! In hypnosis, I first address the stress, then it’s easy to let go of the smoking, or eating, etc…

After the intake period is complete you sit comfortably in a recliner, listening to my voice, as I begin to very gradually guide you into a state of deep relaxation. It is not sleep. You are conscious of my voice, however you allow your body and conscious mind to relax. It a very pleasurable feeling. Some clients feel light and buoyant, others feel heavy, like they’re melting comfortable into the chair. It’s extremely relaxing and stress free. At this point, the subconscious mind is open to the changes that we have discussed at the beginning of the session. The suggestions are now introduced into the subconscious. They are planted, somewhat like seeds. If stress is an underlying issue, a post hypnotic signal is introduced, so that whenever the client feels stress, he automatically takes a deep breath and feels the relaxation he is now experiencing. The client is then brought out of hypnosis. The entire session is recorded on a CD. The client is instructed to listen to the CD every day until the next session to reinforce the posthypnotic suggestions. This is the water that makes the “seeds” grow. The client now has “tools” to empower him. His subconscious simply releases these reminders of what his goals are whenever he needs them. It’s as simple and powerful as that! Additional tools for well being are also given, such as instruction sheets on Diaphragmatic Breathing and Self Hypnosis.
